Reducing stigma and discrimination is critical to improving the wellbeing of people with lived experience of mental illness. Priority Area 6 of Australia’s Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan outlines the need for a nationally coordinated approach to reduce stigma and discrimination towards people with mental illness that is poorly understood in the community.
Our team was funded by the Department of Health to reviewed the literature on anti-stigma programs in Australia and to conduct stakeholder consultations to inform options for an effective strategy for reducing stigma and discrimination in Australia.
In this presentation we will report on the findings from national consultations with over 350 people, including people with lived experience (either their own or as a support person), anti-stigma program providers, health professionals (and students) and those working in the education, employment and social services sectors.
