Pneumococcal disease control in the Asia Pacific Region: Developing economic evidence to guide decision-making
The Centre for Health Policy and the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at The University of Melbourne invites applications for a PhD or MPhil scholar to lead a stipend-funded research project. There are several broad aims of the project, as such there is scope for the successful candidate to shape or weight the exact focus.
The research opportunity will focus on the development and application of health economic methods (including costing data collection and economic evaluation methodology) to understand the costs and benefits associated with pneumococcal disease control strategies, with a focus on pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, in the Asia Pacific Region.
The project is embedded within a larger NHMRC funded Centre of Research Excellence program for pneumococcal disease control in the Asia Pacific Region. The candidate will work closely with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and collaborators at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Fiji Ministry of Health, Mongolian Ministry of Health, and Laos Oxford Mahosot Wellcome Research Unit.
This PhD or MPhil provides a unique opportunity to undertake impactful research in the area of health economics, and generate results that can influence policy in the Asia Pacific Region.
The project will be principally supervised by Dr Natalie Carvalho (Health Economics Unit, Centre for Health Policy) with co-supervisors from across the University of Melbourne, Australia, and internationally. Successful applicants will be invited to contribute to a broader research program, lead out of MCRI, with collaborations at University of Melbourne, LSHTM, Fiji Ministry of Health, Mongolian Ministry of Health, and Laos Oxford Mahosot Wellcome Research Unit.
This project is supported by a Postgraduate Scholarship that covers tuition fees and a standard living allowance of $32,400 per year for up to 3.5 years for PhD applicants, with additional funds available to support travel, conference registration, publishing fees, etc. There will also be the opportunity to apply for top-up scholarships through partner organizations. The successful applicant is expected to apply for a University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarship (link below). If successful they will receive a top-up stipend of $10,000 to a total of $42,400 per annum for up 3.5 years.

Scholarship applicants must be eligible for acceptance by the University of Melbourne into a PhD programme. The offer is conditional upon acceptance into the PhD programme at the University of Melbourne in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. Applicants must have an Honours 1, or have completed a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline with a GPA of 80% or above in related disciplines.

Applicants with qualifications from a quantitative discipline with training in Health Economics, Health Financing, Econometrics, Statistics, and/or Epidemiology are strongly encouraged to apply.
