Visiting Health Economic Scholar Program

Braden Te Ao is a Research Fellow in Health Economics in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). He was previously seconded to the Middlemore Clinical Trials Team at Middlemore Hospital and is currently the NZ emerging researcher representative for the Health Services Research Association Australia New Zealand.

He is a health services researcher whose interest includes access, quality and efficiency of health care technologies and services. In particular, he has strong interests in evaluating the cost effectiveness of health care services and interventions aimed at reducing health disparities for vulnerable populations. His research has been published in medical journals such as the International Journal of Stroke and has been invited to contribute to a commissioned article on traumatic brain injuries with the European Center-TBI network for the Lancet Neurology.

Braden completed his PhD in 2015 entitled "Measuring the economic cost of traumatic brain injury in New Zealand: A cost-of-illness study" with the National Institute for Stroke & Applied Neurosciences through AUT. Dr Te Ao received his MPH in Economic Evaluations from the University of Auckland.

In this presentation, Braden will present some of his recent work on estimating the economic cost of traumatic brain injury in New Zealand, including lessons learnt from conducting cost-of-illness studies and implications for healthcare policy. He will conclude by exploring opportunities for further collaborations.
