This presentation walks through an unintended program of economic research which has lasted more than 12 years. Various techniques, initially focussed on engaging the public in healthcare policy decision-making to elicit preferences and demonstrate acceptability, followed by generating economic evidence on the most efficient approaches to bariatric surgery are explored. The process to get a state-wide pilot trial underway, along with the development of a central referral hub and patient prioritisation criteria to facilitate access to those who will benefit the most are described. Finally, the evaluation of the service is presented including clinical and economic outcomes.
