Our wonderful work experience students.

In late June, the Healthy Housing team had the pleasure of welcoming three work experience students from local schools.

Three year 10 students from local schools joined the Healthy Housing team for a week in June to learn what it's like to work in public health research.

It was a busy and rewarding week full of field work, research, seminars and tours. Students had the opportunity to design and conduct their own indoor air quality study, which they used to inform a public health campaign aimed at improving air quality in office buildings. We also had the pleasure of visiting the University of Melbourne's Sustainable and Healthy Environments (SHE) lab and AirLab to learn more about how air quality research in different disciplines such as architecture and atmospheric sciences.

Students also enjoyed tours of the University’s Medical History Museum, where we learned about Indigenous medicine and healing practices, and the Science Gallery Melbourne's  Emergence(y) exhibition.

To conclude the week, students from all STEM work experience streams gathered to share their research findings, stories and excitement.

Reflecting on what they learned, one student remarked:

"be a person before a scholar."

We couldn’t agree more. Public health research is, at its heart, about improving health and wellbeing for everyone, and that starts by recognising the people behind the data.

A huge thank you to our wonderful students and the Faculty of Science STEM Outreach team.
