Dr Fanny Franchini is a senior research fellow and senior data scientist specialised in clinical and digital health at the Cancer Health Services Research Unit.
She earned her PhD in Clinical Medicine from the University of Oxford, focusing on the tumour micro-environment and immune regulatory networks in colorectal cancer.
Today, Fanny combines her expertise in clinical medicine and data science to enhance public health outcomes, particularly in cancer care. Her professional journey is marked by a passion for bridging the gap between data science and clinical research, which she applies to develop precision medicine approaches and reduce the burden of disease. She uses clinical registries and population-based linked datasets to improve cancer care and public health, aiming to generate actionable clinical insights, inform healthcare policies, and improve treatment equity.
Fanny is also involved in public engagement, participating in outreach programmes to raise interest and awareness in cancer research, and enjoys teaching R and data science methodologies. Collaborating with consumers is one of her favourite research endeavours and she dedicates her time to make consumer-led research happen.
Beyond her work, Fanny enjoys hiking, bouldering, skydiving and painting. Other (semi-)relevant hobbies for Fanny includes: observing monotremes in the wild, koala spotting, perfecting her wombat impression, making friends with flying foxes by saying 'I'm Batman', jumping with kangaroos, smiling to make quokkas proud, marching with penguins and making sure possums and people coexist peacefully.
