UN General Assembly Receives Report on UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, Including Justice Health Unit-led Health Theme
On 11th July, the UN General Assembly received a written report from Independent Expert professor Manfred Nowak, summarising the findings of the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, including findings from the Justice Health Unit-led Health Theme.
The Justice Health Theme served as the focal point for the health theme in the Global Study. Among the recommendations in the report was a recognition that “Health services in detention shall be of a standard equivalent to that available in the community at large” (para 102). This recommendation aligns with an earlier submission that the Unit made to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, regarding the standard of healthcare that should be required in youth detention settings.
