World Health Organization Health in Prisons Programme (WHO-HIPP)
In 2016 the WHO(Europe) Health in Prisons Program and the UK WHO Collaborating Centre for Health in Prisons developed a survey about prison health systems and services. During 2016 and 2017 the WHO(Europe) Regional Office administered the survey to WHO national contact points in member countries across the Europe region, 39 of which completed the survey in consultation with their prison health authorities.
Results of the Europe region survey were made publicly available in December 2017, and are hosted by the WHO Global Health Observatory.
The Justice Health Unit has been collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) Health in Prisons Program (HIPP) to expand this survey to other WHO regions, with the aim of establishing a global minimum dataset on global prison health. More information about this project is available online.
