Research Assistant (Casual) Vacancy

We are looking for a Research Assistant to help us on a new project looking at neighbourhood design and inequalities. Must love Google Maps!

We are looking for a casual Research Assistant to work on a new project using machine learning to combine a population representative study of the social determinants of health with imagery from Google Maps and Google Street View. The primary aim is to understand how neighbourhood design and streetscape characteristics contribute to inequalities in physical function.

The RA will be based at the University of Melbourne, Centre for Health Equity, School of Population and Global Health, and also work with staff at the Melbourne School of Design. The RA will be responsible for writing python scripts to download Google Street View images, Google map images, and Google satellite images, training a Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) model and collecting results. They will require education or training equivalent to a Master’s degree (e.g. Master of Computer Science or related fields), with subsequent demonstrated experience in most aspects of spatial analysis and deep learning, ideally in an urban planning-related setting. They will need to perform tasks such as ethics, spatial analysis, data analysis and programming. More generally, the person will require effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise with members of the project team. The RA will also be involved in the preparation and publication of a manuscript.

Interested applicants can email their CV to Jerome Rachele j.rachele@unimelb.edu.au by COB Friday 12 October.

The project is funded by the Economic and Social Participation Hallmark Research Initiative (ESPRIt) which provides seed funding for interdisciplinary research that aims to strengthen collaborations among researchers who have not previously collaborated.
