Fears for abortion services seven years after Victorian law reform
Recent research by Associate Professor Louise Keogh (Gender and Women’s Health Unit) has revealed a significant decrease in publicly funded abortion services since Victoria completely decriminalised abortion in 2008. These reductions are State-wide and have implications for women having to travel long distances for private care at a considerable cost. Many of the research participants were health services professionals who voiced concerns about reduced access to surgical abortion, and abortion after 20 weeks, as well as concerns that since law reform, there is an ageing workforce not being replaced.
