Informing national policy for pandemic influenza preparedness and response

Project Details

Since 2008, the modeling and simulation group has led a series of national collaborative and stand-alone projects to inform Australian government policy on pandemic influenza preparedness and real-time response.

Project summary

Contributions have included advice on assessing likely pandemic impact and optimal strategic use of interventions to limit the spread of disease, including antiviral agents, vaccines and personal protective equipment, with implications for national stockpiling and distribution requirements. A recent collaborative grant funded by the Melbourne School of Government is improving our skills in communication of complexity and uncertainty to this audience for policy decision support, engaging the Australian Government Office of Health Protection in a process of end-user consultation. This body of work was recognized by the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in 2013, through presentation of a Knowledge Transfer Award to Jodie McVernon and James McCaw.
