Cultural and Global mental health Initiative- The depiction of women’s mental health in the movies

Psychiatry has been a major source of material for movie-makers since the movies began.

Psychiatry has been a major source of material for movie-makers since the movies began.  Psychiatrists, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar, anxiety, psychopaths, treatments, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, stigma, fear, and all the way to the blatant ridiculous and offensive have been represented in myriad of films.  However, by far such representation has been sexist.  Men occupy the major roles in film depictions, with women appearing way behind in numbers and relevance.  This presentation aims to address this inequality and bias by concentrating on women’s depictions in all areas of Psychiatry; from women Psychiatrists and patients, their illnesses and treatments, to the impact those illnesses have on them, their families and society.
