Professor Barbara McPake

Director

Barbara moved to the Nossal Institute in July 2014 after nine years at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. During this time, she directed the Institute of International Health and Development and helped set up a new Department for International Development-funded (DFID) knowledge program on the strengthening of health systems in the aftermath of conflict in Africa and Asia.

Barbara has an economics degree from York University and a PhD in a health economics related area. She has held a series of senior positions in the UK including nearly 15 years at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She also spent a year working for UNICEF in New York managing a research program.

Challenge and stimulation get Barbara out of bed every morning. She says while one person can have a marginal impact on the enormous terrains of global health and development, being involved in the education of others increases that impact. Barbara’s personal goal is to increase people’s access to decent health care so families aren’t subject to a ‘health lottery’ because of where they live and the availability and cost of quality care.
